Southside Market ~ Bastrop TX

The Vitals:
the spot: Southside Market & BBQ 534 Highway 71 Bastrop, TX
the eats: Hot Gut Sausage, spare ribs, pork steak, coleslaw, pinto beans, potato salad
the bucks: $15 a head if you’re looking for a proper spread by the pound
the full nelson: the oldest bbq in Texas but not the best

Southside Market & BBQ is the oldest barbecue restaurant in Texas. Their sausage is of legend and their history is very much the evolution of Central Texas Barbecue whose primetime star, brisket has popped up at in barbecue joints nationwide over the last few years. Southside Market has been on my bucket list for a long time and as luck would have it, in the age of Covid-19, their Bastrop location has a drive thru so there I went.

Brisket Pho: the greatest leftover recipe hack ever

It doesn’t get any simpler. Boiling water. Leftover brisket. Instant Pho. And it is so incredibly delicious. To my peeps in San Antonio, you might have caught the episode of me making this Brisket Pho on the show Texas Eats with David Elder. And if you didn’t, not to worry, this is as easy as it gets.

Warm Lentil Salad: a BBQ leftovers recipe hack

My favorite part about the Austin barbecue experience is over ordering. When you order meats by the pound, a quarter pound sounds kinda minuscule right? And a pound of brisket per person is clearly reasonable. It is that kind of thinking that brings butcher wrapped leftovers to my fridge. Don’t weep too hard for me.

Now one can easily reheat that barbecue in a cast iron skillet or low and slow in an oven. But here is a better idea: Leftover BBQ healthy hack recipes. Sounds far fetched? Well, keep this number in mind: 251 calories.

That is how many calories are in a single serving of this warm lentil salad made with leftover coarse ground sausage link from Micklethwait BBQ, one of the best barbecue joints in Austin, which means pretty much anywhere.

Taco Bronco ~ Austin TX

Austin, Barbecue, Cheap Eats, Tacos/ Mexican By March 4, 2020 Tags: , , , , No Comments

Austin isn’t exactly a two horse town when it comes to food. Sure, there are plenty of farm to table special occasion meals, some ridiculously good burgers, and some of the best soup dumplings I have ever had but if you came here and just stuck to barbecue and tacos, you would cover a lot of delicious ground.

So imagine then what happens if tacos and barbecue get into a tussle? When the dust settles, what emerges is a hand held, no napkins necessary(almost), smoked meat experience. Welcome to a taco new wave. Giddy-up my friends, you are about to jump on the Taco Bronco Chuck Wagon.

I think I’ve been in Texas too long . . .

ACL Eats: Austin City Limits Music Festival Day 3

Austin, Barbecue, Tacos/ Mexican By October 10, 2018 Tags: , , , , No Comments

Day 3 of Austin City Limits Music Festival would be the grand finale of my ACL Eats Fest, and I think I went out with a bang. Micklethwait Craft Meats is not only my favorite vendor amongst the food court here but also ranks up there with the top three best barbecue joints I have ever been too. But don’t sleep on Tamale Addiction, which ended up being the biggest surprise ACL Eat of the festival. Which one will be my ACL Eat of the day? Well there is one way to find out!
