The Pig Whole Hog BBQ montage

The Vitals:
the spot: The Pig Whole Hog BBQ 630 Weaver Dairy Road Chapel Hill N.C. 27514
the eats: Pulled Pork, Pork Ribs, Pork Cheek, you get the idea
the bucks: $10 a head if you’re doing meats by the pound
the full nelson: why folks from North Carolina love their bbq

The Pig Whole Hog BBQ is pretty much exactly that. A whole hog that has been rendered oh so tender with robust with flavor that can only come from whole hog cooking. And The Pig ain’t serving up your average swine either. Their pork is locally raised, hormone and antibiotic free. Plus you can get pulled pork sandwich for $6 bucks. My kinda spot.

Golden Brown & Delicious ~ Greenville S.C.

Best Thing I Ever Ate, East Coast, The South By September 4, 2019 Tags: , , , , No Comments

The Vitals:
the spot: Golden Brown & Delicious 1269 Pendleton St. Greenville SC 29611
the eats: Smoked Fish Bagel, Burger, Fried Chicken Sandwich, really whatever you want
the bucks: $10 or less, not including fries
the full nelson: the restaurant all the chefs in town were talking about

It’s been almost two years since I walked into the doors of Golden Brown & Delicious but the memory of the smoked sable on a toasted bagel dressed to the 9s certainly does linger. And being featured on an episode of Best Thing I Ever Ate only adds fuel to my fire of needing to post about this spot to the world.

If you caught that episode of Best Thing I Ever Ate in June, you saw that the deli spirit is alive and well in America. Still, I’m quite happy to save my bagel noshing for New York City. Russ and Daughter’s is a personal fav of mine and I know I am not alone in that sentiment. But exceptional bagels happen outside of Gotham, just ask anyone in Greenville SC.

Yes, I said Greenville SC . . .

Bang for your Pho Buck: Lee’s Bakery ~ Atlanta

Asian, The South By December 18, 2018 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

The Vitals:
the spot: Lee’s Bakery 4005 Buford Highway NE Ste C Atlanta GA 30345
the eats: Large Combination Pho, Grilled Pork Sandwich
the bucks: $10.25, $3.75 respectively
the full nelson: the definition of why Vietnamese joints are Cheap Eats havens

Upon my initial research into Atlanta for Cheap Eats, I knew I was going to have to make a stop at Buford Highway. The legendary drag is home to tacos, sushi, dumplings. curries, Korean food beyond BBQ and so much more. It got me a little nostalgic for my LA days where an immense diversity of food cultures can be unlocked with the power of the automobile. It was a challenge to single out one cuisine for my inaugural Buford Highway feast, but it had been a minute since I had some good pho and all it takes is a google search to know that Lee’s Bakery Atlanta tops many lists.

More Cheap Eats Birmingham

Cheap Eats, The South By November 27, 2018 Tags: , , , , , , 3 Comments

When it came time for Cheap Eats to come down South, Birmingham AL was high on the foodie radar. Forget that Food & Wine magazine moved here(Southern Living is located here as well), Birmingham is home to a James Beard award winning restaurant, a diverse and contemporary food scene and more than a couple places for Cheap Eats. Now if you saw our episode in Birmingham, you already know about one heck of a meatloaf plate and a meaty grilled cheese fit for a Cajun. But in my time in Bham, I found a few more contenders, so let’s take a look at even more Cheap Eats Birmingham!
